I can see you have a lot of walking routes on your website – is it possible to get them in leaflet form?
Yes, we can supply most of the walking routes in leaflet form. We don’t charge for them, but would ask that you make a donation to the Pewsey Vale Tourism Partnership to cover the cost of postage, as it is quite expensive nowadays. We are a voluntary, not- for-profit organisation, so every penny counts!
Is the Vale of Pewsey dog friendly?
Yes. Many of the places to stay are dog friendly – you can find out more here.
Many people like to bring their dogs as the walking is so good here. However, we would ask that you respect the countryside you may walk through and keep your dog(s) on leads and under control.
The Vale of Pewsey is a very rural area and rights of way go through farmland. You will not only see livestock on some farms, but many of the areas, particularly downland, will have ground-nesting birds between March and the end of July. Although your dog may not actually chase the birds, just the disturbance from a predator is enough for some birds such as skylarks and peewits to abandon their nests. Also, please pick up your dog’s poo and don’t leave the poo bag on a hedge or elsewhere and take it home with you!
There is lots of information on how to walk through fields with livestock and how to follow the Countryside Code – have a look here for information.
I am exploring my family tree and have relatives that once lived in one of the Pewsey Vale villages. Would you be able to help me to find out more information?
Yes – we are always happy to link you to the relevant church or community if we can. We would also advise that you contact the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre in Chippenham as they hold lots of local history archives.
I am keen to go walking on the rights of way, but I’ve never done it before. Do you have any information that would help me to understand the maps and where I can or cannot go?
Walking on Public Rights of Way (PROWs) for the first time can be daunting. Here are a few useful pieces of information on how to understand better the rules you should follow and how to negotiate possible problems along the way. We would also recommend having a look at The Ramblers’ Walking Tips & Advice.
- What is a Public Right of Way? – Video short from Wiltshire Council
- Where do I get mapping information from? – That depends on what you are doing. If you are following our leafleted walks, then the maps are within the leaflets, together with detailed instructions. Otherwise you can buy physical printed maps from the Ordnance Survey Online Shop (OS Maps) or you can download apps to your phone that provide walking routes you can follow. Just be aware that if you are in the depths of the countryside, you may not be able to get a mobile signal at every stage and we would therefore recommend that you have a printed map with you just in case.
- What if I come across a blocked route? – Register the problem on the MyWilts app if it’s in Wiltshire. If a ‘cross-field’ route is blocked by crops, then you can usually walk around the edge.
- What about livestock? – Have a look here at The Ramblers’ advice.
- Is it ok to take dogs on walks? – Generally speaking, yes, but they must be on a lead and under control, particularly around livestock. For more information have a look at the Kennel Club’s advice here.
