Location: The Chains, opposite The Londis, High St, Great Bedwyn, SN8 3NU.
After a short walk along the towpath, this walk climbs steadily up to the Roman road, passing through an ancient sunken holloway.
From the crest of the Roman road there’s a distant view of Wilton windmill, now bearing its new replacement sails and ready to start milling again. In the other direction, down across the valley, is Crofton Beam Engines.
We’ll go steeply downhill following the Roman road to cross the canal and railway at Crofton village and return to Bedwyn close by Haw Wood.
No stiles. Bring a drink or snack for our short refreshment break.
