The Living Church
Andrew Ziminski, author of the acclaimed “Church Going: A Stonemason’s Guide to the Churches of the British Isles” provides the perfect narrative for the village churches in the Vale of Pewsey:
The companionable old churches of the Vale of Pewsey rest beneath the long, low horizon, brushed by the downs.
None are great ecclesiastical showpieces. Instead, they beguile with their simple beauty, from the chalky, flint walls patched with brick, and softened by time and the elements, up to the sturdy towers, squared and practical.
Step inside via the porch with its stone side benches worn by centuries of parish meetings, and you’ll find the mood deepens. There is a smell of damp stone reluctantly warmed. Light filters through plain glass held in modest tracery to the pews, often Victorian, occasionally older, that carry the polish of seated generations.
It is tempting to think of such places as relics, as survivals of a more devout age, but they remain open, literally and figuratively, and offer a sense of continuity to a community that may come less often but still comes.
In the end, the Vale of Pewsey offers a lesson in proportion. Its churches do not dominate the landscape; they complete it. They say, quietly and convincingly, that we are here, and have been for some time, and intend, without fuss, to remain.

Discover the Churches of the Vale of Pewsey
Explore our churches, discover their stories and enjoy the paths that connect them.
The Living Church is bringing the churches of the Vale of Pewsey to life through a series of information boards and walking routes across the three church groups in the area: Savernake, Vale of Pewsey and The Cannings & Redhorn.
Each information board offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and architecture of its church, alongside spiritual insights and reflections to inspire quiet contemplation.
Alongside the information boards, a network of walking routes is being developed, inviting you to explore the churches and the beautiful surrounding countryside on foot.
A project taking shape
As of October 2026, information boards are beginning to be installed across the area and the walking routes are being mapped out. This page will grow over the coming months, with new information added as each board is installed and each route is completed.
While the project is taking shape, there is already plenty to discover. You can explore the churches of the Vale of Pewsey using the Churches of the Vale page in the meantime.
Keep visiting this page as the project develops and discover the history, heritage and spiritual life of these special places.
Our thanks to the North Wessex Downs Landscape Trust and the Wiltshire Historic Buildings Trust for supporting this project which is being delivered by Sylvie Clayden.
